MARY ANN MALONE
1945 - 2014
Mary Ann Malone dedicated her life to the education of students for 47 years.
A lifelong resident of Portsmouth, Ohio and a graduate of Notre Dame High School, Mary Ann worked for the Diocese of Columbus teaching in Parochial Studies for twenty-five years, before becoming the Director of Student Support Services at Shawnee State University.
For over twenty years, Mary Ann tirelessly assisted students, encouraged them to believe, and pushed them to succeed. With her door always open, she fostered an atmosphere of caring and understanding for her students. Every time she saw a student, she asked, “How are your classes?” or “What can I do to help?” Many of the students who faced challenges or lacked self-esteem, found hope with Mary Ann. Through her self-sacrifice and dedication, she nurtured an atmosphere of success for all students. With poise and professionalism, Mary Ann showed she believed in Shawnee State students and in turn they believed in themselves.
Mary Ann Malone retired from Shawnee State University in December of 2013. To continue the legacy of good work she created throughout her career, a fund has been established in her honor. The fund is a continuation of her life’s work as well as her belief in student success at the university.

“Mary Ann was a college mother that cared about each and every soul she came in contact with.” - Danielle Clark, SSU Graduate
“She was an amazing woman who would truly do anything to help the students she so sincerely cared about. God bless her and comfort the countless people whose lives she touched.” - Jed Bailey, SSU Graduate, Current SSU Instructor of English
“Mary Ann Malone changed my life. When I felt alone she was there, when I didn’t want to push she pushed me, and when I wanted to quit she made me stay. I would not have signed up at Shawnee State if it wasn’t for her, and I would not have a 3.5 GPA and going to graduate school if it wasn’t for her. I never had anyone that believed in me, and she loved me like I was her own daughter.” - Autumn Lyon, SSU Student
“I recall being so confused as to why Mary Ann would always go out of her way to support me, to stop and talk to me - even outside of campus. What was so special about me? What did she see that I didn’t understand? I realized later, Mary Ann treated all students this way. It takes a special person to be so present in all of her personal relationships and to always present herself in such a positive manner. The last time that I saw Mary Ann was the moment before I walked on stage at graduation to receive my diploma. I honestly don’t think I would have made it there without her.” - Melissa “Mel” Collins, SSU Graduate
