With Approximately 400 trees representing more than 120 species within its 65 acres, the campus of Shawnee State University has been formally recognized and nationally accredited by ArbNet as a Level 2 arboretum.

The Shawnee State University Tree Campus Care Committee will celebrate this distinguished designation on Friday, September 27, 2024. The arboretum will be named after Professor Emeritus Dr. Robert (Bob) Deal, who guided the selection of tree species, their procurement, and their placement on campus while serving as a Professor of Biology at Shawnee State University for 29 years.

A short reception will begin at 2:00 PM in the lobby of the Vern Riffe Center of the Arts, followed by the Deal Arboretum naming ceremony outside on the campus grounds of Shawnee State University.
