The Shawnee State University Development Foundation hosted Casino Night and Bourbon Tasting at the Morris University Center on Friday, February 2, 2024. The annual event is a fundraiser for The Shawnee Fund, the Foundation’s unrestricted fund that supports scholarships, grants, student and faculty research, academic and student programming, internships, and much more.

The VIP Bourbon Tasting was hosted once again by former Shawnee State University President Dr. Jeff Bauer. A knowledgeable Bourbon lover, Dr. Bauer treated the audience to stories from his time on the Bourbon Trail and the history and science behind Bourbon itself. He then led the crowd through the Bourbon tasting and scoring process, a detailed procedure which involves rating each different bourbon on appearance, smell, taste, finish, and complexity.

Once the final bourbon had been scored, the crowd headed up to the second floor of the University Center and into a pop-up casino provided by the Cincinnati Circus. With chips in hand, patrons circulated through the various gaming stations, including poker and blackjack tables, a roulette wheel, and a craps table. The Cincinnati Circus also provided jugglers, a tarot reader, and dealers for each gaming station. Jeremy Craft took home the trophy for the most chips won and the night ended with a split-the-pot drawing.

The event was sponsored by UK King’s Daughters, Port City Pub, Southern Ohio Medical Center, The Scioto Ribber, The Portsmouth Brewing Company, Covert’s Furniture, Desco Federal Credit Union, Kentucky Farmers Bank, ECDI Women’s Business Center of Central Appalachia, and Complete Smiles Family Dentistry.
