Historic Boneyfiddle Walking Tour

Saturday, Sep. 28 2019

B. Glockner Building, Market Street, Portsmouth, Ohio

Tickets for this event have sold out.

The Shawnee State University Development Foundation and the Shawnee Digital History Lab are hosting an exclusive, behind-the-scenes, historical walking tour of Portsmouth's Boneyfiddle District. The program for this adults-only event will include stops for drinks at the 7pour0 Brewery and dinner at Patties & Pints, culminating in a silent auction and a final round of drinks at Bernie G’s Speakeasy on Market Square.

We will explore the history of abolitionism and the Underground Railroad, learn about the origins of Portsmouth’s iron and shoe industries, visit historic locations associated with the city’s horse and buggy days, newspaper publishers, bootlegging and prohibition, and much, much more.

The proceeds from the ticket sales and silent auction will go towards supporting the Shawnee Digital History Lab’s two major initiatives: (1) the Historic Portsmouth Newspaper Digitization Project, which seeks to digitize over 190 years of local newspapers; and (2) the Scioto Historical mobile app and website project that explores the history of Portsmouth and the surrounding Appalachian region. With virtual historical markers, Scioto Historical is at the forefront of the development of Augmented Reality (AR) technology for historic preservation and tourism. Help support undergraduate research at SSU, while advancing the cause of historic preservation and the economic revival of Portsmouth.

The walking tour will be led by Dr. Andrew Lee Feight, Professor of American History and the developer of Scioto Historical. Based, in part, on undergraduate research conducted at SSU, the evening’s program will focus on thirteen historical sites that have been identified for inclusion in a new AR tour of the Boneyfiddle. Join us as we “beta test” the new tour and seek your input on the final design.

The silent auction at Bernie G’s Speakeasy will include reproductions of the original blueprints for Spartan Municipal Stadium, original artwork by local artists, a weekend getaway package at the Shawnee State Park Lodge; dinner gift certificates; and other baskets of locally sourced products and services.

Tickets are limited to 30 and must be purchased in advance. $50 for one; $75 for two. Meal (not drinks) provided by Patties & Pints; Cash Bar at Bernie G’s.
